To help your child become a better reader:
* Listen to them read aloud - this is the single most meaningful activity you can do to help your child become a more fluent reader.
* Have them sound out unknown words rather than just telling them the word.
* Make new words meaningful by making connections between the new word and the words & world he knows.
If a child struggles with reading, encouraging him/her to read silently will not make him/her a better reader.
To help your child with reading comprehension:
* Before the book is opened, establish a purpose for reading. (what will happen to the main character, etc)
* During reading, comment on the beginning of the story. Establish the who, what, where, when and why from the beginning.
* After finishing the book, ask your child to summarize the story. See if they can retell the events in order.
